I often get admiration for the heavy-duty equipment I carry at the weddings I photograph.  I receive compliments like, “THAT is a camera” and “I bet your camera makes great images.”  Now, I have to admit, my equipment is pretty bad@$$!  I mean, check it out!

Now, I will take a second to brag about my “baby” (WARNING: technical geek-talk ahead.)  She is a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 70-200 f/2.8L lens.  This is my dream team and what I use about 75% of the time.  This is only one of my cameras and lenses, of which I have a variety.  I also have several lights and triggers, allowing me to achieve whatever comes to my mind.  And, yes, the equipment does go a long way in creating my style and gives me the tools I need to make beautiful wedding images.  But it isn’t everything!  Cameras don’t make images, I do!

To prove that the photograph is created by the photographer, I decided to ask one of my very laid back couples, Carl and Bethany to meet me in Dallas for a few minutes.  I purposefully left my “dream team” at home and took only my humble iPhone 5s.  I took a couple of cute images of them on my phone, edited them using two apps called AfterFocus and Snapseed, and now posted them on here.  So, these photos are not taken or edited with any of my professional equipment.

One more example of what I can do on my iPhone.  This is my gorgeous two-year-old son, Cody.  =)  It was taken on my iPhone 5s with the app Afterfocus and edited with Snapseed.

I will be adding a couple more examples on Tuesday with another awesome couple, Kristen and Kyle.  =)  Be on the lookout for those!

Now, I am NOT saying that professional equipment is unimportant.  Don’t think that I, or any other professional, would show up at your wedding with just an iPhone or consumer camera.  What I AM saying is, even if someone has a 5D Mark II and 70-200 2.8L, that is no guarantee that the images are going to be spectacular.  The photographer’s talent and skills are what REALLY make the images.
